Security is an integral part of any home. Unlike in the past, security is now regarded as a necessity rather than a luxury. People have tried devising numerous safety mechanisms and implementing stringent laws to maintain the highest security levels possible. However, no security system is quite complete without the addition of a good security camera. The beauty about getting a security camera is the convenience it brings. You can literally watch all the happenings in your home via your tablet or smartphone, enabling you to keep tabs on your kids and say hi to your beloved pets. As far as good security cameras go, the Netgear Arlo Q sits distinctly from the pack.

Product description

The camera lens has a 130-degree field of view which allows you to see the entire room. You can even stream videos live using your tablet, computer or smart device. The videos are in 1080p HD resolution. You therefore get a phenomenal video quality to enhance your viewing experience.

The Netgear Arlo Q also has an enhanced night vision technology that enables you to see crisp images even in the thick of night. It’s the perfect camera to use if you’re always wondering why your kids are always so rackety at night. You can also monitor your elderly parents to ensure they’re sleeping peacefully, or even check on your dog.

It has a built-in speaker and mic which support an impressive two-way communication. You can comfortably listen to the commotions in your home and talk back. However, your camera needs to be in a WiFi range of about 300 feet. Ensure you have a strong internet connection before installing the Netgear Arlo Q Security Camera.

This camera also alerts you instantly in case it detects any sound or motion. The alerts are sent to your mobile device. This allows you to take appropriate action to maintain the security of your home. If your kids are coming home from school, you can say hi to them. However, if you spot weird activity from unrecognized people, you can inform the police to check on it at once.

The Netgear Arlo Q comes with a cloud storage that’s absolutely free. This allows you to share, view and download all video recordings that happen within the past seven days free of charge. In addition, you don’t need to sign any contract for the same.

It has a wall mount that you can use to attach it to the wall. Alternatively, you can use its magnetic strip to allow it to stick to the wall. The setup itself is quite simple and takes less than 10 minutes. The user-friendly mobile app or web app comes in handy during the setup.

The Netgear Arlo Q weighs 1.2 pounds. Its dimensions are 4.93 by 5.99 by 4.45 inches. It’s therefore portable and can be set up in any room you wish.

At the time of writing this post, the Netgear Arlo Q was priced at around $200. This is a bit pricey compared to some of its peers.

  • The Netgear Arlo Q produces extremely crisp videos which are in 1080p High Definition quality. You therefore get to see even the finest of details. You can recognize individuals immediately you view them.
  • The free cloud recording is definitely a huge plus. It saves your video footage for up to one week! As if that’s not impressive enough, there’s an option for upgrading this feature. If you’ve been wondering what goes around your home when you’re not around for the whole week, the Netgear Arlo Q is definitely for you.
  • With its amazing motion alerts, it’s hard for burglars to get away with it. This efficient security camera detects the presence of any motion or noise and alerts the user immediately. After you’re alerted, you can check in to decipher whether there’s anything to worry about.
  • It’s 130-degree wide angle viewing lets you watch the whole room, even in the nooks and crannies that you normally wouldn’t bother about. You therefore get a hawk-eye perspective of the whole room. Check to see is your kids are playing fair, and monitor them when they are on time out.
  • Its setup is quite easy. You only need to connect its detachable USB cable (9 feet in length) to a power source. Next, you provide the appropriate WiFi credentials, and you’re good to go.
  • Because of its impressive two-way communication and night vision, the Netgear Arlo Q Camera acts as the perfect monitor for your baby, your elderly parents or even your pets. Simply listen in to ensure that everything is hunky-dory.

  • The process of integrating the Netgear Arlo Q with the pre-existing wireless system is a tad complicated and can be frustrating. You might need the help of an experienced tech when setting up the camera.
  • The built-in speaker doesn’t produce the best sound quality. However, this is to be expected since the camera is compact and it’s mainly designed for security rather than communication purposes.
  • It’s difficult to set a monitoring schedule for the entire night. You’d need to set two schedules. For instance, one for Monday evening from 2100 hours to 0000 hours, and then another for Tuesday from 0000 hours to 0500 hours.

With such an impressive array of functionalities, it’s hard to ignore The Netgear Arlo Q. Although it’s a bit pricey compared to several other security cameras in the market, the price is justified by its impressive features. You can use it to record video footage for up to a week using its amazing cloud recording technology that’s absolutely free. Detect suspicious activities in your home using motion alerts that are sent directly to your phone. In addition, you can set specific regions in your house to monitor motion, and make a monitoring schedule that fits you perfectly. The Netgear Arlo Q is a definite must-have.

This sounds like a good security camera that will do the job. I’m a complete newbie in this area so I have a few questions, hope you don’t mind.

Would this be a good alternative to a baby monitor? I like the fact that you can get alerts and view live. So if me and my husband go out to dinner and leave the little one with a sitter I can still keep an eye on her.
Can the video be downloaded? It says that it can be saved for a week, but can you download the video if you have to.

Also will this work with any smartphone?

    Thank you for this review,

Hi Vicky, thank you for commenting. By all means, ask as many questions as you need.

Whilst these indoor cameras have not been specifically designed to be used as a baby monitor, they can be used as an alternative if you want clear video footage to be able to check on your child. This is one thing that I think the traditional baby monitors lack in, video quality. And usually, the basic baby monitor only transmits audio, and no video.

These cameras would be ideal to keep an eye on the sitter while you and your husband are out for dinner.

Yes, you can download the video by using the smartphone app, or by logging in to your Netgear Arlo account. The smartphone app works on iOS and Android, but you can also log in using any tablet or PC on your web browser.

Thanks for your great questions. If you have any more, just let me know.

Hi there, great review…so I was wondering if you could maybe help me with my setup?

Over the last couple of days I’ve been trying really hard to set up the Arlo Q but I keep on running into problems with it. I continually get to the point where it asks for the QR code but then the whole thing seems to stop.

Basically, I’m having problems connecting it to my Sky router.

I was wondering if you had any tips for this sort of problem or if you had encountered similar problems before?

Would be very grateful for any tips!

Hi Chris, thanks for your comment.

So when you get to the point where it asks for the QR code, are you pointing the Arlo Q camera at the QR code on your phone/computer screen? Make sure you hold it about 6 to 8 inches away from the QR code. Once the camera detects the QR code, you should hear a chime and the camera will then try to connect to your network. In addition, you may run into problems if your network password contains special characters. Therefore you many need to consider changing your network password.

I hope this helps. If you still run into problems, please let me know.

Hi, this sounds like a perfect solution for securing my home. I especially like the fact the it shoots HD quality videos. Lot of the security cameras I have been looking at, only record really low quality videos, some even still black and white. I am thinking this would be a great aid to see that the kids are actually doing their homework when they come home from school instead of playing video games!
The cloud storage is great, I was first doubting if 1 week would be long enough, but if I can upgrade it for longer time, it will be just great!
Does the app it comes with work both iPhone and Android? This is important as we have both in our household!

Hi Xena, Thanks for your comment! What a great idea, using these cameras to keep an eye on your kids doing their homework.

Yes the app does work on both iPhone and Android. Plus you can also access it from any web browser on a tablet or computer. So you should be covered. Any more questions, just let me know.

    Hi there,

This one looks very impressive. Having the recordings for a week in the Cloud is an excellent feature. It also has excellent reviews from other sources and the price has since come down a bit (now $179.99) so I am considering this. The ability to get alerts sent to your mobile phone is genius. I have a house in Philippines and do regular trips overseas so this would come in handy.

    1. Andrew Post author

Hi Craig, yes it will come in handy if you do regular trips away. You will be able to check on your house using the smartphone app which will give you a live feed, or access the 7 day recording in the Cloud. Plus the alerts are great. They will let you know when the camera detects movement so you can check up on things immediately. Thanks for the comment. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

This is an impressive camera indeed Andrew!
My favorite feature has to be the two-way communication.

A few questions on that, however. Now I assume that the two-way communication is linked to a phone app and the camera that is in good wifi range correct?
So I can be out at the golf range and talk to someone in my home through the app?

That’s a truly innovative idea and I must get one! I see that one of the cons on the Netgear Arlo Q is the speaker quality. Is the camera equipped with any sort of output jack in which I could hook up a speaker to it?

I think it would also be a great way to scare my kids when they walk past the camera! 🙂

Thanks for writing this review. I will be keeping this camera in mind!

Hi David, the two-way communication is a very handy feature. Not only for security purposes but also to allow you to communicate with someone at home, like a family member, while you are out. It is linked to the smartphone app but it doesn’t necessarily have to be connected to wifi. It will require a good cellular data connection, then you will be able to communicate from anywhere in the world, even on the golf course 🙂
It doesn’t have an output jack, so the audio will only be from its own speaker. I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, let me know and I’ll help you out.
