The ability to keep an eye on things when nobody is home gives me that extra peace of mind that my belongings are safe and secure. Most security cameras these days allow you to achieve this by keeping an eye on what is going on in and around your home, even when you are not there. If you are looking for a high quality indoor or outdoor security camera, this Nest Cam security camera review will really be of help to you. In this review, I have provided information on what to expect from both indoor and outdoor Nest Cams, their advantages and disadvantages and why they could be an excellent choice when it comes to securing your home and family.

Overview of Nest Cam Security Cameras

Nest Cam Security Cameras are known for offering high-quality video and audio performance. These cameras are also an excellent choice because they are known to be compatible with a lot of smart- home gadgets. Another thing that makes the Nest Cams stand out is the fact that they have great geofencing, and they are accompanied by an app that is very easy to use even for beginners who have no experience working with cameras. There are many high-quality features, so please read on for more details.

Uses for the Nest Cam Indoor Security Camera

The indoor version of the Nest Cam is used, as the name suggests, for the purpose of enabling users to have an eye on anything inside of their home, 24 hours a day 7 days a week. What this means is you can be away from home for an extended period of time with the peace of mind that you can check into your home at any stage. I’ve also seen some people use the indoor Nest Cam as a baby monitor, or even to keep an eye on their kids in another area of the house. All great uses for the Nest Cam.

Key Specifications and Features

The indoor Nest Cam includes several important features. I’ve previously touched on the fact that you can see the vision remotely while you are away from your home at any time of the day. In addition, the Nest Cam features 1080p video quality, 8X digital zoom, and two-way audio, allowing you to not only see what is happening in your home in high-definition, but also hear what is happening or even communicate with the person you are watching. A handy feature if used for monitoring children.

With a subscription to Nest Aware, you gain access to storage of your footage in the cloud, ready for you to access and review when you need it. In addition, you also get Person Alerts – be notified when Nest Cam sees a specific person – and Activity Zones – Monitor specific areas and get custom alerts.

Uses for the Nest Cam Outdoor Security Camera

Security cameras inside the home are very important. However, it is also important to have an eye on what is going on around your home. Nest Labs went to work and designed the Nest Cam outdoor security camera which is weatherproof and includes many features that enable you to spot intruders long before they enter your home. This enables you to protect property both inside and outside your home.

Key Specifications and Features

The outdoor Nest Cam includes a number of stand-out features. First and foremost, this camera has a weatherproof enclosure. This helps in protecting the camera against water, the wind and other elements ensuring it is functioning at full capacity in every season. Similar to the indoor camera, you can stream the live footage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by using the Nest app.

The outdoor camera comes with a unique magnetic mount so you can point the camera exactly where you want.

  • Two-way audio
  • The app is very easy to use

  • They work well with other smart devices
  • The outdoor Nest Cam is weatherproof, perfect for all conditions

Nest Cam Security Camera Cons

  • Requires a subscription to Nest Aware to gain access to all the features (including storing vision in the cloud)
  • Needs to be connected to WiFi to work

What is the cost of Nest Aware?

There are two subscription options for Nest Aware.

10-day video history – $10 a month or $100 a year for your first camera, $5 a month ($50 a year) for each additional camera.

30-day video history – $30 a month or $300 a year for your first camera, $15 a month ($150 a year) for each additional camera.

Signing up to Nest Aware gives you the following:

  • Full 10 or 30 days video history

  • Activity Zones
  • Create and Save clips and time lapses

Conclusion

In conclusion, Nest security cameras are one of the best cameras you can buy in the market today. Quick and easy to install, you will be up and running recording your security vision in no time. Personally, I think the notification feature is great as it gives you the ability to then view the live vision, and make a call to the police if necessary, or take action. This feature is especially important for those who might have a very busy schedule.

The biggest downside to the Nest Cams is the subscription fee so that you can record the vision. There are alternatives that do not require a subscription. This will involve installing a security system that includes your own Digital Video Recorder and storage. But if you prefer to store your recorded vision in the cloud, then a Nest Cam set up is probably for you.

Finally, setting up a system with both outdoor and indoor cameras will give you that extra piece of mind when securing your home, or keeping your family safe. Nest Cams plus Nest Aware could definitely be worth the investment.

    Hi,
What a great Idea, I have been looking for a remote camera to be able to keep an eye on my 82-year-old mother who lives alone in a remote part of England. She is getting a little frail now and I live 6,000 miles away so this would be great to keep an eye on here, especially with the two-way communication feature.
Just a couple of questions before I dive in and place an order:

    1) Is it possible to have just one camera that will be able to notify me of movement so I can monitor the front door?
    2) I would probably require 4, can they all be linked together?

Hi Tony, Thank you for commenting. I like your thinking. The Nest Cams would work perfectly in this situation. The answer to both of your questions is yes. You certainly can have just one camera to monitor the front door and notify you of movement. And you can have 4 cameras all linked together under the one Nest Aware subscription. However, each additional cameras does attract an additional monthly charge. $5 a month for the 10-day plan, or $15 a month for the 30-day plan. If you have any further questions before making your purchase, by all means, let me know and I’ll help you out.

Hi there! I am currently looking for a security camera that I can always check with my smart phone. Actually, this is my first to buy this kind of product because we really need it in our home right now. I am skeptical to buy directly because I don’t know the features yet. This seems to be a good starter. But I have a concern, do I need to hire someone to install it or I can install it by myself?

Hi John. Thank you for your comment. Yes the Nest Cam is a really great camera if you are looking for a do it yourself option to secure your home. It is really easy to install yourself. It comes with everything you need. Screws, wall anchors, and an installation guide to step you through it. Please, if you need any help when installing the camera, get back in touch with me and I’ll do my best to help you out.

Also, I will be posting about how to install security cameras in the near future, so feel free to come back and check it out!

    Hi Andrew,

I don’t think it’s too expensive, even for the subscription. You can’t put a price on safety and having a backup of the videos is a great idea. If it was stored on a hard disk somewhere that could be easily taken by anyone breaking an entry.

I think the cloud storage is genius and would act as a better deterrent against burglary. Some people may be put off by the monthly expenditure though. Do you think it would have been a better idea to include this in the price of the cam?

Hi Craig, your right, you can’t put a price on safety. I agree that the Cloud storage is a great option. If you can afford the monthly expense, then it will be like a set and forget system and you only have to worry about the camera itself, rather than an additional device to store the footage. Plus, storage in the Cloud is the way to go these days for most things.

I think if they were to include the price of storage in the camera, it would inflate the price too much and make it less affordable. So in a way, by allowing a monthly subscription, they are making this premium service available for all.

      Thanks for the comment!

I ended up on your article because I am currently in the process of locating a nanny-cam for my partner. It’s not that we suspect her (the child minder) of anything…we just like to have peace of mind if anything goes wrong!

Anyway, your Nest Cam Indoor Security Camera looks small enough to fit into this type of task – is it regularly used as a nanny cam and would you recommend it as one?

Thanks in advance for your help – we don’t know where to start with this subject!

Hi Chris, having that extra peace of mind is certainly great to have. The indoor Nest Cam could be used as a nanny cam. In fact, most of the indoor cameras these days could be used for this purpose, it just depends on what features you need, or if you need to hidden from sight, etc.

What I think is great about the Nest Cam is the two-way communication. You could actually have a conversation with the child minder while you are out of the house. Therefore I do recommend the Nest Cam.

      Thanks for the comment!

    Hi,
Thank you for an other nice camera review. I am especially interested with the fact that it seems easy to link these cameras in order to cover the whole house, atelier and the offices. The fact that I can get notifications when something moves, enables me to check and assure everything is good or eventually inform the police when I am away on business trip or holidays!
Do I understand it correctly that this is only for indoor use and cannot be used in humid conditions, such as porch?

Thanks for your comment. The Nest Cam comes in an indoor and outdoor model. The one that is dark in color is the indoor model, and the white one is the outdoor model. So if you want one for your porch, I’d suggest the white outdoor Nest Cam, as it is weatherproof. I hope this helps.
