Current FBI statistics have it that an incident of burglary is perpetrated every 15 seconds somewhere in the United States. As a concerned homeowner, you want to know the best way to secure your house to avoid falling under this statistic. If you are the victim of a break-in, you not only lose valuables but also face the risk of injury. In the event, it happens when you are not around, it doesn’t instill a sense of security either.
You do not have to despair. There is a lot you can do to beef up security in your home, prevent burglaries and in the long run keeping you and your family safe. Here are 5 simple ways to help you secure your home and family.
Never Advertise Your Absence
So maybe you’ve decided to take your family on vacation, and nobody is home. Did you know that 50% of the burglaries occur when no one is home? There are some smart ways to make your home look occupied and keep the intruders at bay.
- Install automatic light timers to mimic your normal patterns
- Lower your phone’s ringer volume and forward your calls; burglars often call before breaking in
- Organize to have your lawn mowed or snow removed
- Don’t stop your mail and newspaper delivery, have someone pick them up
Make it Hard to Break-in
Access is everything. First, is to secure the doors and windows. For the doors, you can use metal doors or solid core and secure with quality locks. Also, ensure that the frames are sturdy and the hinges protected. For the windows, you can replace the manufacturer latches with locks or key operated levers. To strengthen the glass in your windows, you can introduce tempered or laminated glass.
Install a Home Security System
A security system increases the chances of a thief being seen and captured. Choose a security system that uses motion detectors, cameras, alarms and smoke detectors. It can also deter criminals when you use window decals or a yard sign to say that you are protected. You can also opt for glass break sensors that trigger the alarm system. Lastly, please never post your passcode on the security alarm keypad.
Know Your Neighbors
Neighbors who look out for each other are the best security system. Make it a point to know them and cultivate a good relationship with them. A good neighbor can always be on the lookout when you are away and alert you in the case of any suspicious activities. If there is a neighborhood watch program, right, if not, consider organizing one.
Eliminate the Chances of Intruder Hiding
When chances of being seen are least, that is the best time for a burglar to strike. Deny him of his cover, and your house will be safe. You can do this by ensuring that your landscape is well lit, both front and back. Lights with motion sensors are a good option. Thieves can also hide in thick bushes and shrubs so make sure that the plants around your house won’t be the reason you get robbed.
Once you have put in place some or all of the above security measures, it should help give you additional peace of mind that the safety of you and your family has improved.
