Great for: Unlocking the front door without a key
Have you ever left the home and forgotten your house keys? I certainly have.
It’s actually quite a funny story.
My wife and I went to pick up the kids from school and out of habit, we locked the door that enters our home from the garage, but we didn’t have the key on us. We returned from picking up the kids and suddenly realized. How are we going to get inside? We didn’t have a spare key hidden outside. Family members that had a spare key lived nearly 2 hours away. What were we going to do?
Here is the funny part.
I recently bought a hole saw attachment for my power drill for a DIY project. Guess what I used to get inside… I drilled a nice hole next to the door lock so I could get my hand through and reach the lock from the inside. Now… we have a hole in our door.
If only I had an electronic deadbolt like the Kwikset 910 z-Wave SmartCode, I wouldn’t have gotten into this situation. Anyway, lets take a closer look at the Kwikset 910, so you don’t do what I did.
The Kwikset Signature Series products are known for their elegant designer styles and superior quality of security, and the Kwikset 910 Z-Wave SmartCode Electronic Touchpad Deadbolt is no exception. This electronic deadbolt allows you to have a personalized code, so you can enter your home without a key. The SmartCode is easy to use, install, and program, operates on 4 AA batteries, and offers SmartKey re-key technology as a form of back-up.
Benefits of the Kwikset 910 Electronic Deadbolt
The Kwikset 910 is the model up from the Kwikset 909 SmartCode Electronic Deadbolt. The key differences in the models is that the Kwikset 910 allows up to 30 customizable codes, and it comes with Z-Wave technology so you can connect it to your home automation system and lock your door from anywhere.
Some of the other great benefits of the Kwikset 910 is that you are able to control who has access to your home. You can re-key the lock yourself in a matter of seconds. This single cylinder deadbolt can be locked or unlocked by the turn button on the inside or a key on the outside. You need to re-key if you have recently moved or if you lose your keys. SmartKey provides a top quality and high level of residential security. Its added feature BumpGuard prevents lock bumping.
The satin nickel finish adds a crisp, clean and modern feel to the product.
How to use the Kwikset 910
The first thing you should do is pair your hub with the lock because locks like this one require safe and secure pairing with the hub and that necessitates a relatively more powerful signal from the hub. The signal may be strong enough to pair if you wait until you install the lock, but not to pair securely. This could leads to erratic behavior on the part of the device.
This is how it is done:
First grab the piece of the lock that goes inside the door, take the cover off and pull out the battery holder, insert the batteries and reinsert the holder. The arrows at the top should be pointing in the direction of the door. Then lay the lock component next to the hub, programming button side up. Set your hub in “inclusion” mode. Push the upper left “A” button once to put the lock component in Z-Wave inclusion mode. You will use the third button, bottom center later to program pin codes enabling manual operation of the lock.
Now you can begin with actually installing the lock itself.

Who is the Kwikset 910 for?
If you’re looking for a electronic deadbolt that integrates with your Z-Wave system, then this is one you might want to consider.
Maybe you are like me and you keep forgetting your keys getting yourself locked out. With the Kwikset 910, all you need to do is press the lock button when you leave, and enter your code when you get back.
What I like about the Kwikset 910
I like that its programming is pretty simple, that you don’t need a Z-wave controller system to program and operate it. You can manually program two access codes without a Z-wave system. If you have one, you can program up to 30. The lock creates an alarm device that memorizes a number of events you can use as triggers, like for instance you can have the light in the hallway come on when a user code is entered to unlock the door at night, but all the lights are turned off when the door is locked from the outside.
Another advantage is that this lock allows 4 – 8 digit combinations, coming to a grand total of up to 400,000 permutations.
And how cool is this:
It is compatible with Amazon Alexa. What this means is you can control the device using your voice. Now that’s smart!
What I don’t like about the Kwikset 910
You can’t use a handheld controller to operate the product – your USB or Z-wave interface requires the latest firmware and you require a computerized controller like Homeseer.
Overall, the Kwikset 910 Z-Wave SmartCode Electronic Touchpad Deadbolt is a really great product that is affordable, convenient and adds an extra layer of security for the home. The easy installation and the sometimes lifesaving re-keying feature of the lock create an all-round high-value product experience.
