Great for: Automatically locking the front door
I remember growing up as a child and my parents had a spare key hidden outside the home. It was usually under the door mat, or hidden under a rock in the garden. And this was very handy as I would walk home from school and they would still be at work, so I could let myself in by using the spare key.
Times have changed.
And for good reason too. Criminals are getting smarter. They will look in the usual places where families hide their spare key. Yes, it would be pot luck if they find one, but the fact is, there is a chance they could. And once they find the spare key, they have free range on your home.
This is where an electronic deadbolt such as the Kwikset 909 SmartCode comes in very handy. No more need to have a spare key left outside, which I think is great in these current times we are in.
The Kwikset 909 SmartCode Electronic Deadbolt, is one of the most popular items on the market in its class. I spoke to a friend of mine who had been looking for quite some time for a good security deadbolt for his house that would give him peace of mind. He bought the Kwikset 909 and was very happy with it.
It features one touch locking with a motorized deadbolt and backlit keypad for increased visibility, automated door locking after 30 seconds, eight customizable access codes including a master code option, and ANSI / BHMA Grade 2 certified and lifetime warranty on mechanics and finish. The warranty on the electronics is one year.

Benefits of the Kwikset SmartCode 909
One of the best things about the Kwikset 909 is that it locks itself. It is super easy to install as it takes less than fifteen minutes. The installation itself is harder than programming the codes. The buttons light up for user convenience and you can toggle it on and off if you want. A tiny marquise shaped plastic light under the manual lock/unlock flashes amber or green when the door is locked or unlocked from the inside. It flashes every 6 seconds. It flashes amber when locked and green when unlocked. This way you don’t have to wonder if the door is locked or not. The unit also boasts a security feature emitting a 20-second beep, after which it locks you out for a few minutes if you start inputting random codes, and the beeping is really loud.
How to use the Kwikset 909
It takes minutes to install the security deadbolt and all you need is a screw driver; no hard wiring is necessary. It locks itself in 30 seconds and fits standard doors (1 3/8″ – 1 3/4″) – no screw holes are generally required. You can set multiple codes and change them in 2 minutes easily. There are three screws that you need the special wrench, which is included, to open and change the codes, change batteries or toggle settings – this is really great and a much-needed security feature.
If you need to drill out an existing bolt-hole for the new deadbolt to go in, it can take up to an hour to install the item.

Who is the Kwikset 909 for?
This product really is for anyone looking to upgrade their standard deadbolt, to an electronic one. Maybe you are someone who forgets to lock the front door, or you forget to take you keys with you. If this is the case, then this product is for you. Having an electronic deadbolt will complement other security devices that you may already have.
Unfortunately, even the best security deadbolt may not be enough for complete security. Thankfully, along with an electronic deadbolt, there are many other security devices on the market that can help you achieve total security in your home.
What I like about the Kwikset 909 SmartCode Electronic Deadbolt
I love that I can still unlock my home even when I don’t have the key. Maybe I left the keys at home when I quickly went into the city to run some errands, or I forgot the front door was locked when checking the mail.
I also love that I can change the code as often as I want and I can set an emergency code if I have to let someone into the house while I’m on a business trip.
What I don’t like about the Kwikset 909 Deadbolt
The loud beeping is an advantage, but to me it’s also a disadvantage. The motorized locking mechanism of the lock can be a little noisy too.
I find it a little annoying that you have to remove the screws if you want to replace the batteries or enter new codes. On the other hand, this could be seen as an added security measure.
Finally, being a keypad, the robber could always dust the bolt for fingerprints to see which four digits are pressed regularly. Changing the codes often would help with this.
Generally, this item is well up there when compared to other items of the same class. It’s quite easy to use and a very reliable product.
If you live with others, like maybe a roommate, make sure you tell them the code! Unless you are mad at them and want to keep them out. Inform your partner or family that they can change the code and how to do it, and warn them to always tell you. And most importantly, don’t write the code down somewhere so that anyone can see – that sort of defeats the whole purpose of the thing!
