There are so many options for alarms in today’s market. Gone are the times when you need to have a system physically wired into your home and installed by a professional. Don’t get me wrong, you can still have a professional security system installed if you choose, but there are cost effective solutions out there that you can do yourself and still secure your home against nasty crimes.
Types of Alarms
Door and Window Alarms – These devices can sound an alarm when a door or window is opened. The typical set up is usually magnetic sensors that detect when the window or door has been opened. Other types include door stop alarms or sensors installed on windows that detect breakage.
Motion sensors – With sensors spread throughout the home, they sound an alarm if they detect movement in the room.
Fire and Carbon Monoxide Alarms – As the name suggests, alarms for if there is a fire in the home or dangerous levels of carbon monoxide
Panic Buttons – Can be wearable devices that sound an alarm at the push of a button. Very handy for the elderly not only in their home but also in public. If they ever feel in danger, they can sound the alarm for assistance.
Silent Alarms – A silent alarm can be installed with a system that is monitored by a security company. When the alarm is triggered, it doesn’t actually sound an alarm that would scare off the intruder, rather it notifies the security company who would then notify the authorities if required.
What are the benefits of Alarms
The number one benefit is obviously to protect your home and family. The sound of an alarm can scare off the intruder after they have attempted to break in or even simply advertising the fact you have an alarm installed can deter the crime in the first place.
There is also a cost benefit to having an Alarm. Insurance companies are likely to reduce your insurance premiums if you are securing your home by installing security systems.
Finally, the overall piece of mind that your loved ones and your belongings are safe in your home. This is most important in my mind, keeping my family safe and secure.
Things to consider when purchasing an alarm system
A few things to note if you are considering purchasing an alarm system for your home.
Subscription based monitoring service – Having a security company monitor your home might be a better solution and make you feel as safe as possible. In other words, leaving it to the professionals.
Do-it-yourself or professional installation – It really depends on the type of system you want to install. If your system requires wiring to be run throughout the home, all connected to a central control keypad, then I would suggest employing a professional is the right way to go. In addition, if it needs to be connected to a landline phone, a professional installation might be your only option. However, if your system has devices that are wireless or don’t require complex setups, then doing it yourself might save you quite a bit of money.
Do you need security cameras? – Security cameras can record intruders which may help in identifying them. In addition, you could have the ability to check on your home from anywhere in the world over the internet.
In the end, it all comes down to how much you are willing to spend versus how safe and secure you want to be.
